SNL Reviews: John Mulaney/Thomas Rhett (3/2/19)

I’m back! This time, we’re going to be taking a look at John Mulaney’s second hosting stint. The first one was a surprising classic, but will this one be as good? Let’s see....

Cold Open: Michael Cohen Testifies

In which Michael Cohen (Ben Stiller) testifies before Congress.

• As you can tell by my description, not much to say about this cold open. Stiller tried his best, but not even he can save this tepid material.

• Bill Hader makes his first of two guest appearances tonight. I thought he would help improve this, but his character quickly got old, which is something I never thought I’d have to say about Bill Hader.

Monologue

Mulaney does a stand-up routine about his Jewish wife, living in New York, and police sirens.

• Mulaney’s last monologue was amazing. This one, however, was kind of long and boring. He still does a great job with it, at least.

• The only reason I’m not giving this a lower grade is because he saved it near the end with his hilarious impression of a police siren.

What’s That Name?

Contestants on a game show fail to recognize their loved ones.

• This sketch was first done all the way back in 2011. I haven’t seen the original sketch, however. That being said, I enjoyed this a lot.

• Bill Hader reprises his role as the host of the game show. His performance is killer, as usual. 

• Mulaney’s role as the contestant was just as stellar. I especially love his reactions to the host’s evil aside glances.

• The best part is when Mulaney frantically tries to guess the last person’s name, and even though one of the guesses is correct, he doesn’t get any points because he didn’t really know it.

Commercial: Toilet Ejector Seat

A toilet that launches you off of it should you have a heart attack.

• This was the best sketch of the night. I don’t think I’ve laughed this hard at SNL since the last time Mulaney hosted.

• I fucking love how obvious the dummies are in this. Then it gets even funnier when they fail to land on the bed.

• The capper on it all is how it drops a book on you when you land on the bed, to give the impression that you died while reading.

Shark Tank: Legal Edition

A version of the TV show Shark Tank where all the contestants are famous lawyers.

• Uggggghhhhhh....we get the return of Kate McKinnon’s creepy, unfunny Rudy Giuliani impression. When is SNL going to stop making her play men? It always looks disturbing rather than funny, and I’m sure there are other people in the cast who need airtime (hint hint Mikey Day) that could pull these roles off.

• I thought this would ruin the sketch, but then, I saw Cellino & Barnes. For those who do not know, they are two lawyers based in Buffalo, New York, who have an incredibly catchy jingle. The joke here is that all of their responses are to the tune of this jingle. I know it sounds incredibly dumb, but goddammit, it made me laugh! In fact, the real Cellino & Barnes saw this and got a kick out of it as well!

• Chris Redd’s Jussie Smollett impression was hilarious with his claim that he was assaulted by Donald Trump on his way to the studio. When he asks Alan Dershowitz (Mulaney) if there are security cameras, and Dershowitz confirms that there are, he admits that his story isn’t true.

• “Cellino & Barnes, injury attorneys, and even we won’t touch this!”

Film: The Unknown Caller

Chad (Pete Davidson) gets a phone call from the mysterious Ferguson Tuttle (John Mulaney).

• This wasn’t laugh out loud funny, but I liked the creepy atmosphere. Plus these Chad films are pretty much the only thing I can still tolerate Pete Davidson in.

• Mikey Day briefly shows up as a pizza delivery man, only to be killed. Is it me, or is Mikey Day always having bad things happen to him in sketches? He’s been fired from a job because his last name is “Bangs”, he gets bullied for looking like Bart Simpson, he’s had news reporters make fun of him for liking dolls, and now this? I’m not complaining about this, it’s just a random observation.

Cha-Cha Slide

Daniel Weissman (Mulaney) gets nervous at a party.

• I didn’t quite understand what the point of this sketch was. Apparently Mulaney’s character is nervous that he doesn’t know anyone at the party, but it turns out that he’s friends with everyone there? Huh?

• That being said, the visual of Mulaney dancing was pretty funny.

Musical Performance: “Look What God Gave Her”

Weekend Update (featuring Vaneta and Wylene Starkie)

• Ho-hum. Another boring Weekend Update. 

• I have no fucking idea what McKinnon and Aidy Bryant’s commentary was supposed to be. What made it even harder for me to understand was how they kept chuckling at this. Has Jimmy Fallon taken over or something?

• I’m kind of surprised that Michael Che didn’t make any anti-white jokes here. But that only gives you the false impression that he’s improved. I’m sure he’ll go back to them once Season 45 begins.

• That whole part where they show a compilation of Trump quotes was just terrible. It’s clear from what they showed that Trump was making jokes, but, of course, they use this as “evidence” that he’s going insane. I guess Trump can’t even try to be humorous without getting mocked.

• The one positive I’ll give this is that it was a surprisingly short Update.

Bodega Bathroom

A man (Pete Davidson) learns why you should never use the bathroom in a bodega.

• As if the episode couldn’t get any worse, they decided to make a sequel to that awful Les Miserables sketch with the lobster from last season. You’ll recall that I really hated that one. Well, I hated this one even more!

• While I will give this one credit in that I actually understood what it was parodying this time (Willy Wonka instead of Les Miz), that didn’t make it any good. These “parody” lyrics sound like they were written by stoners at Yale.

• Another problem is that this sketch is way longer than the other one. Every time I thought it was going to end, Mulaney kept saying “You haven’t learned your lesson yet” or some other dumb shit like that.

• All I can say is that they better not do another sketch like this if Mulaney hosts again. But they probably will, knowing SNL.

Cinema Classics

Uncovered outtakes from a classic Humphrey Bogart film

• And the episode just keeps getting worse. They bring this shitty sketch out of the mothballs again.

• I’m surprised at how awful Mulaney’s impression of Bogie was. It was just him speaking in his normal voice with a slight accent. Humphrey Bogart is such an easy voice to do, so something like this, especially when coming from someone as talented as Mulaney, is especially terrible.

• Another surprise here was that Kate McKinnon actually made me laugh! You heard right! She made this weird noise with her mouth that was really funny. While her Lauren Bacall impression wasn’t much better than the Bogart impression, at least she was trying.

Side Note: The rerun of this episode added a dedication to Margaret Karolyi, whoever that is.

Final thoughts: Man, this episode was such a disappointment. The first half of the episode was pretty good, and it gave me my favorite sketch of the season, but it crashed and burned after Update. Mulaney himself appeared to be kind of burned out, in sharp contrast to how he appeared last season.

SNL Reviews: Adam Driver/Kanye West

My SNL reviews are back. This time, I’m going to tackle one of the worst episodes I have ever seen; namely, the Season 44 premiere hosted by Adam Driver. When this one first aired, I posted my reactions on Facebook live. And boy, did my followers love it. So, now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s begin....

Cold Open: Kavanaugh Hearings 

In which a drunken Brett Kavanaugh (Matt Damon) rambles on about how he is not guilty for 13 minutes.

• What a way to start the season, huh? For those unaware (or if you’ve been living under a rock), this segment is making fun of the Brett Kavanaugh sexual abuse hearings. During one of them, he casually mentioned how he drank a lot in college, when these incidents allegedly happened. I’m guessing the writers of SNL saw that, and decided to milk it for all it was worth. Too bad it makes this sketch extremely unbearable to sit through.

• By the way, I’m not joking in the description. This segment really went on for 13 minutes. I’ll discuss the potential ramifications this had on the episode near the end of this review.

• TLDR: this sketch blows, let’s move on

Before we continue, I have to point out that the show’s intro sequence was finally updated after four years. All I can say is that it looks miles better than the rest of the show’s filmed sequences these days.

Monologue

• While I will give it points for not being another musical or questions monologue, this still sucked.

• Despite all of the horrors going on around him, I admire Adam Driver for keeping his cool. He’s such a great actor.

•The only time I chuckled was when Pete Davidson was told to shut up.

Sketch: Fortnite

HOW DO YOU DO, FELLOW KIDS?

• That description pretty much sums up how I feel about this one. As soon as I saw them setting this sketch up during the commercial break, I cringed.

• The sad thing is that they could have possibly made this funny if they had taken the time to mock the game and its fanbase. But no. Instead they just focus on stupid shit with the controls.

• Maybe they thought the game’s creators would give them free stuff if they put it in a sketch? I don’t know, fuck this sketch, it sucks.

Film: A New Kyle

Jealous of Pete Davidson’s newfound popularity over the summer, Kyle Mooney decides to freshen up his image. Also, Wendy Williams is there, for some reason...

• You knew they were going to do a sketch addressing the sudden popularity that Pete Davidson gained over the summer break. But why did they have to make it so boring?

• I think this sketch would have worked if the main focus was someone other than Kyle. Why not someone who’s been on longer, like Kenan?

Sketch: Coffee

Customers at Burger King are confused about what exactly is in their coffee.

• After this sketch aired, people complained that it was nothing more than an advertisement for Burger King. They are absolutely right.

• Besides that, this sketch is also very unfunny. The only joke appears to be confusion over whether or not BK puts actual burgers in their coffee. Which is....dumb.

Film: Rad Times at Frat U

A film about bad experiences in college...or something...

• I’m running out of ways to say that this episode sucks, so, to sum this one up, I hated it.

Starting with this review, I won’t be talking about the music performances anymore, but the ones in this episode were too bizarre not to mention.

In this first one, Kanye and his sidekick, “Li’l Pump”, are dressed up as bottles. While the song itself sucked, the visual of the two of them dressed like bottles more than made up for it.

Weekend Update (featuring Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Serena Williams, and Pete Davidson)

• As if the episode couldn’t get any worse, along comes Weekend Update. The nice reprieve from Trump jokes that lasted up until this point is sadly over, as we’re now back to comparing him to mentally challenged people.

• Then....SHE appears. Kate McKinnon (aka “My Nemesis”) shows up as Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Every time she does this impression, I want to rip my hair out. The actual Ginsburg is bad enough, but I’d gladly take her over this crap.

• While My Nemesis is blabbering on, Leslie Jones shows up as Serena Williams, obviously as a parody of her then-recent tantrum in the middle of a match. The only problem...nobody cared about that story anymore by the time this aired. Does anybody even remember it as I’m writing this?

• Another thing I can’t stand is Michael Che and his anti-white people jokes. It’s pretty much a guarantee that he’ll get in at least one each episode. SNL needs to fire him and replace him with someone who’s less biased.

Sketch: Career Day

Young Mordecai (Davidson) takes his grandfather (Driver) in for Career Day at school. Hilarity (allegedly) ensues.

• I’ll be honest. I had literally no idea what this one was going for. The kid’s grandfather is prone to long winded speeches? Um, funny...?

• At least Driver’s performance was pretty good, but still not enough to save it.

• Another thing I don’t understand is why so many people say this sketch is awesome. I don’t know what sketch they saw, but it clearly ain’t this one!

Musical Performance #2

Sketch: League of the South

Members of some kind of neo-Confederate group are at a meeting.

• Once again, what’s the joke? Vermont is apparently just as racist as the South? No thanks, I’ll pass.

And what do you know, that’s the end of the episode already! Or is it...?

As the credits roll, there is a third musical performance. This is already strange, but what’s even stranger is what allegedly happened right after the cameras stopped rolling. Going by what several people in attendance that night have said, Kanye proceeded to go on a pro-Trump rant. While not on the broadcast itself, clips of it that were taped by audience members circulate online. 

So why was this allowed to happen, you ask? Well, I have a theory. My guess is that the overly long opening sketch messed up the timing of the episode and they had to cut some things out. To fill that time, they had Kanye perform another song. Kanye got mad and went out the only way he knew how. This might also be why they didn’t have that many Trump references in this episode; they didn’t want to offend Kanye.


Dress Rehearsal note: A sketch called “Phone Repair” was cut from the live show. Judging by a picture of it I saw on Getty Images, it looked like shit.

Overall episode rating: 2/10

I’ve learned that season premieres aren’t usually the best, but no one told me they would be this awful. This has to rank among the worst episodes of all time. While other episodes might suffer from a bad host, or a bad musical guest, this one was brought down by overly long sketches, unfunny jokes, lame concepts, terrible pandering, and a complete waste of Adam Driver’s talents. And, for the very first time in these reviews, I can honestly say that there were no sketches that were actually good.

Cold Open: Kanye and Trump

Kanye West (Chris Redd) visits Trump at The White House.

• Jeez, these cold opens are getting harder to tell apart these days. I will give the show credit for not featuring Baldwin's Trump until three episodes into the season, but that doesn't make this sketch any better.

• What's the show's "biting" satire of Kanye? Uh....he tends to talk for too long, and he only cares about himself. That's about it...

Monologue

Seth Meyers tells a story about his time on the show.

• A solid monologue. The best thing about it was that it wasn't a stupid musical number or a questions from the audience thing. No interruptions, just Meyers telling a story. That is what a good monologue should be.

Sketch: Movie Talkback

At an awards show, the nominees all have complaints about the dumbest things possible.

• This was a surprisingly solid sketch, with lots of laughs throughout.

• It was so refreshing to see the show mocking liberals, something that has been occurring less and less as the show goes on.

• The only bad thing was that they made an "Adele Dazeem" joke. What year is this?

• Probably the best commercial I've seen for a long time. Sorry about the short description, but I don't really remember a lot about this one.

Two police officers (Leslie Jones and Ego Nwodim) do stuff.

• This one was kinda boring. I liked Nwodim's performance in this, but she couldn't save the sketch from being a total failure.

Teenagers tell scary campfire stories.

• This segment was pretty well shot, but was lacking in the humor department.

Sketch: Cosby in Jail

Bill Cosby (Kenan Thompson) spends his first day in jail by annoying his new cellmate.

• Now THIS was a great sketch! I loved every second of it! Any sketch that has Kenan doing his Cosby impression is a winner in my book.

• Best line: "Turtle? I thought that was Quincy Jones!"

Weekend Update (featuring Baskin Johns and Seth Meyers)

• And now the show starts going downhill with this boring and uninspired WU. None of the jokes landed, and the anchors had this annoying tendency to laugh at their own material. And it wouldn't be Weekend Update without Michael Che's good ol' anti-white people jokes!

• There were two guest commentaries. The first one was by Heidi Gardner as someone named Baskin Johns, who I've never heard of. I hate it when they have impersonations of people who nobody knows or cares about. Those impressions are only funny to whoever wrote them in.

• The second guest commentary is by Meyers, who takes the time to bring back his old "Really" segment from when he was the Update anchor. There's just one problem; those segments were terrible, so why would we want them back in this episode?

A talk show where everyone speaks in obnoxious Southern accents.

• There is only one joke in this segment; "Duh-huh, Southerners talk funny! Please laugh!"

• This might be one of the worst sketches I have ever seen.

Sketch: Cuban Vacation

A couple returns from their Cuban vacation, and won't stop talking about it.

• I'm not gonna beat around the bush here. This was even worse than the talk show sketch. The only "joke" in this one was the couple's mispronunciation of Cuba as "Cooba". And it gets more annoying every time they say it. 

• I was not surprised at all to find out that James Anderson was responsible for this sketch.

Film: Trees

Pete Davidson and Chris Redd rap about trees. Al Gore cameos.

• Ummm….I guess this one's trying to make a statement about global warming...or something???

• I predicted that they were going to make an Al Gore reference as soon as I saw the subject matter. I was right, unfortunately. And, in case we didn't get the reference, Al Gore himself appears! Remember when they had celebrities make special cameos in sketches for an actual purpose? Those days are long gone.

Sketch: Halloween Gig

Treece Henderson (Kenan Thompson) performs his latest gig, Halloween style!

• This was an amusing way to end the night. I just love whenever Kenan has a role that requires him to speak really fast.

Conclusion: This episode wasn't perfect, but it's easily the best one since John Mulaney's. The first half was pretty strong, but the episode lost steam after WU, dragged down by the awful Cuba and talk show sketches.
